Filling in a government job application: 10 things to check

This article in another language: हिंदीગુજરાતી

Short answer: before applying, read the official notification in full and check the cut-off dates for age and qualification. Enter your name and date of birth exactly as on your Class 10 certificate, upload the photo and signature in the specified size, confirm the fee has gone through, and apply well before the last day. If something is wrong, fix it in the correction window.

Small mistakes — a wrong photo, an incomplete fee payment or unchecked eligibility — get many applications rejected. This checklist works for any recruitment, whether SSC, railways, banks, police or a state commission.

The three stages of an application and the main check at each.

What should I check before applying?

1. Read the whole notification

Read the official notification (advertisement) from start to finish. The number of posts, qualifications, age limits, exam pattern, application dates and fees are all in it. Always take the notification from the commission's official website, not from social media posts.

2. Check your eligibility yourself

The date on which age is counted (the cut-off date), the date by which your qualification must be complete, and the age relaxation for reserved categories cause the most mistakes.

3. Keep your documents ready

  • A recent passport-size photo and a scanned signature
  • Your Class 10 marksheet (for date of birth) and other certificates
  • Caste, EWS, disability or domicile certificates, if they apply
  • A working mobile number and email that will not change during the whole process

Which mistakes should I avoid while filling the form?

4. Name and date of birth as on the Class 10 certificate

Enter your name, parents' names and date of birth exactly as on your Class 10 certificate. A mismatch found at document verification can cancel your candidature.

5. Photo and signature as specified

Notifications specify the photo size (in KB), dimensions, background and sometimes a date on the photo. A blurred photo, a selfie, or one with a cap or sunglasses can get the application rejected.

6. Choose your category carefully

Choose a reserved category only if you hold a valid certificate issued as of the date the notification specifies. A wrong category causes trouble later.

7. Fill in exam centre choices with care

In many recruitments the centre cannot be changed later. Put the cities that suit you as first, second and third choices.

What should I do after submitting?

8. Confirm the fee payment

Check the payment confirmation and transaction ID. Sometimes money is debited but the form still shows the fee as "pending" — check the status before the last date and retry if needed.

9. Keep the printout and PDF

Keep a PDF and a printout of the completed form, the fee receipt and your registration number. You will need them to download the admit card and check results.

10. Use the correction window

Many commissions open a "correction window" for a few days after applications close. Fix any mistake then — there is usually no other chance.

Don't wait for the last day. Websites slow down under heavy traffic near the deadline and payments get stuck. Apply in the first few days.

Most recruitments open a correction window after applications close. Check its dates in the notification and make corrections then.

How do I reduce my photo's file size?

Any image editor on a phone or computer can reduce the dimensions and quality to bring the photo within the required KB. Make sure your face is clear and the background follows the rules.

Most recruitments forbid multiple applications for the same post, and doing so can get all of them rejected. Check the rule in the notification.
